When do the press should curtail free speech?

When the topic touches on subjects considered as national security. As a media student it is implied that you do not write stories that may place the government, or your organisation in a bad light, well not if you want to keep your job. I am currently unemployed so that does not bother me. With monopolization of the m media it has become easier for the military to apply pressure to the directors of the media to follow the official version. Image and not substance has curtailed free speech on many very serious crimes.
