I appreciate guidance on outdoor firepits. Pros and cons of freestanding or in ground, natural gas or LP.?

I am considering putting a firepit in my backyard. I have been looking at both freestanding self contained models in both natural gas and LP, but most are not natural looking and I have a natural stone patio and boulders, so I was thinking of putting an in ground gas ring with stainless steel or aluminum pan and stainless steel or iron gas ring, and building the surround out of natural stone. Again either LP or natural gas. I would really appreciate anyone’s guidance or experience with this process. Thanks so much.
