Are the Shows on MTV such as the "The Hills" real or fake?

I hate the show period, but are those stupid shows on MTV real of Fake?? The Hills and Laguna Beach is a complete waste of T.V. space in my opinion, but once again, I would just like to know if it is real. By real I mean real people with no script!!
