Shiba Inu owners, how aloof is your dog?

My 2 year old Shiba Inu. Doesn't come when I want to pet or give him a hug. He is very attached to me but when I'm watching TV he goes to another room and sits rather than sitting near me. He also would rather sleep downstairs rather than sleeping in my bedroom upstairs. He would rather lead like a sled dog, not necessarily pulling, but tells me where he wants to go making me pull him in the right direction. He won't eat unless I take him for a long walk in the morning. One thing that is cute, he puts his head on my lap when he wants a treat or to get petted and licks my ear when he is outside with other neighbor dogs and is having fun. Is the aloofness from being an ancient breed? What are your experiences?
